Typically, a clinician will rule out other conditions via:

  • Physical exam
  • Colonoscopy and Endoscopy
  • Stool test (e.g., for parasites)

At that time, if your symptoms match SIBO, your clinician may go directly to treatment.

The breath test is most commonly performed due to the limited invasiveness, lower cost, and reduced risk as compared to the bacterial count (jejunal aspirate), which is usually performed via an endoscopic procedure.
